12.00 PM · Midday
The jeep comes for you
We meet your train or pick you up in town. Kuldhara on the way, then the road stops being a road.
3.30 PM · The long afternoon
Out to the camels
Forty kilometres past the tourist strip, where the dunes have nobody on them.
6.24 PM · Sunset
The half hour everybody came for
It goes fast. Twenty minutes of colour, and then the temperature drops.
9.00 PM · After dark
Dinner, and the fire
Cooked in front of you on the sand. The musicians come after, and stay as long as anyone is up.
12.30 AM · The small hours
Beds on the open sand
No walls and no light for forty kilometres, which is the whole reason to come this far out.
7.06 AM · Sunrise
Breakfast, and back by eleven
The sand is cold at six. Tea, something to eat, and the jeep back into Jaisalmer.
In town · 40 km from the camp
The hotel on Fort Road
Where you sleep the nights either side of the desert, and where the rooms are. Same family, different building — and a rooftop that looks straight at the fort.
