The Wonbin difference

Hosted by someone who grew up in these dunes.

"Anyone can put a tent on a dune. Knowing which dune, and which one nobody else has found yet, takes growing up here."

Talab has guided in the Thar for over a decade. He meets most guests himself, and he is the one who answers your WhatsApp. You are booking with the owner, not an agent.

Your night, start to finish

From the station to sunrise on the dunes.

Midday pickup, back in Jaisalmer by 11 the next morning. Times move a little through the year with the sunset.

  1. Midday

    We collect you

From the railway platform, the bus stand or your hotel. Then a room at our hotel to shower and change, and somewhere safe to leave your bags.

  2. Afternoon

    Jaisalmer, five spots

A short tour of the city before you head out: the fort and four more stops, with someone who can actually tell you what you're looking at.

  3. 3:00 PM

Out to the camp, 40 km

By car, away from the city and off the Sam road that every other jeep is on.

  4. En route

    25 km jeep, three deserts

Open jeep across the Thar, Damia and Laxmna deserts, then camels for the last stretch up to the dunes.

  5. Sunset

In the middle of the desert

You sit down and watch the sand go gold, then red. It gets very quiet out there.

  6. Evening

Tea, then three hours of music

Welcome tea, coffee and snacks at camp. Then the programme starts: Rajasthani folk music, Kalbeliya dance, a fire dance, and a group DJ set to close it out. About three hours in all.

  7. Night

15 km open safari to Siala

After the music, back out into the dark to the Siala desert, the side the tour groups never use. The only light out there is the fire you bring.

  8. Late

    Campfire, dinner, blankets

Dinner is cooked over the fire and eaten in the open. Then the blankets come out and you sleep with the Milky Way over you.

  9. Sunrise

    Then a camel across Siala

Wake for the sunrise, eat breakfast, then ride out across sand that sees almost nobody. You'll pass the herding families who live out there on the way back.

  10. 11:00 AM

    Back in Jaisalmer

Dropped at your hotel or the station. Shower, change and pick your luggage up from our hotel in town before you move on.

Where we camp

Not at Sam. Forty kilometres past it.

Almost every desert camp in Jaisalmer is at Sam Sand Dunes, on the same strip, reached by the same road. We drive past the turning.

JaisalmerFort Road · 0 km
Sam Sand Dunes~40 km · the main road
Siala & Damia~40 km, off the road

Sam Sand Dunes

  • The main desert road out of Jaisalmer, and most of the camps on it.
  • Tents pitched side by side along one strip of dune.
  • The camel and the jeep are usually settled out on the dune, not before you go.
  • Busy at sunset, and busy again after dark.

Siala & Damia

  • Off that road. The last stretch is by jeep, then by camel.
  • Far enough out that no other group shares the dune with you.
  • The camel, the jeep and the taxes are inside the price you were quoted.
  • Once the fire burns down, the only light is the sky.

Sam is worth seeing at sunset. It is not where you want to wake up.

Tents & comfort

Pick your tent, or skip the tent entirely.

A tent with its own washroom, or open sand beside the fire. Heavy blankets either way.

Guests outside a Swiss tent at the Wonbin desert camp

Swiss tent or cottage

On the Damia package you pick a Swiss luxury tent or a cottage. Either one has its own attached washroom with hot and cold running water, and someone on call through the night.

A camp bed made up with quilts on the open dunes, nothing overhead

Or no tent at all

On the Siala night you sleep in the open beside the fire. Bed, mattress, turban and heavy blankets go down on the sand, and there is nothing over you. Showers are back at our hotel afterwards.

Guests sitting around the campfire at the Wonbin desert camp at night

Warm at night

Desert nights cool down fast once the sun drops, and in the cold months they reach about 5°C. You get heavy quilts and a fire that stays lit until morning. The camp is enclosed, the pathways are lit, and someone is on duty all night.

Strictly no rowdy behaviour

We run a family camp. Groups who turn up to drink and shout get sent away.

Day trips & longer safaris

Not staying the night? Five more ways into the desert.

Same crew, same deserts, shorter or longer. Prices are per person and include the jeep, the camel and the food.

  1. Sunset Cultural Desert Safari 8½ hours · Kuldhara & dunes From ₹2,250
  2. All Day Safari with Cultural Program 11 hours · Kuldhara & dunes From ₹3,000
  3. Desert Life Luxury Safari 2 nights, 2 days · Sand, then tent From ₹3,500
  4. Desert Life Adventure Safari 2 nights, 2 days · Open sand, x2 From ₹4,000
  5. Wild 3 Day Desert Safari 3 days · Open sand From ₹6,000

Each one has its own page with the hour-by-hour itinerary and everything included. See all camps & safaris.

Our own hotel on Fort Road is where you shower, change and leave your bags. Free with every camp package, whether or not you book a room.

Rooms for the night either side run from a dorm bed to a family suite with a fort view, GST included.

Included with every camp packageA room to freshen up on arrival, a shower when you get back, and somewhere safe to leave your luggage in between.

"Riding the camels into the dunes was so blissful, and the amazing camel men, Ali and Eli, were delightful company, always working hard to make us feel the most comfortable… I loved falling asleep under the immense starry night sky and waking up to our beloved camels and the sunrise."

Marla PhuntsokGoogle review · March 2026

"I loved sleeping under a sky full of stars on a cold desert night… I chose the open desert stay instead of a tent, and it felt incredibly freeing and peaceful. The caretakers from Wonbin's team were genuinely warm, kind and welcoming, which made the experience even more special."

Amruj SaiGoogle review · January 2026

"The package is very good. They provide pickup and drop from railway station… they bring me more hidden location other than mentioned itinerary. The guide was good, Mr. Mahboob Ali and Shadam Khan are very good and provide warm gesture. Overall experience is excellent."

Before you pack

Questions people ask before booking.

What does a desert camp in Jaisalmer cost?

A night at our camp starts at ₹2,500 per person. That one price covers your jeep, your camel ride, the cultural programme, dinner, breakfast, bedding and all taxes, and nobody will ask you for more once you are at the camp. Every rate, and what the same things cost at Sam →

How do I book, and do I have to pay in advance?

Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size. We check availability, send the inclusions in writing, and hold the booking. Most guests pay at the camp. We will not ask you to transfer money online, which is the scam this city is known for.

Do you camp at Sam Sand Dunes?

No. Sam is where almost every Jaisalmer camp is, pitched side by side along one strip, busy at sunset and busy again after dark. We drive past the turning to Siala and Damia, the last stretch by jeep and then camel. Sam is worth seeing at sunset. It is not where you want to wake up. What Sam is actually like →

Is the camel ride really included, or is that extra?

Included in every package. It is the most common complaint in this city: camel owners at Sam and the Fort routinely ask for ₹500 to ₹2,000 halfway through the ride. Ours is settled before you leave Jaisalmer. How long the ride is, and what to wear →

Can I sleep outside instead of in a tent?

Yes, and it is the night we would pick ourselves. The Siala package has no tent. A bed, mattress and heavy blankets go down on the sand beside the fire. Getting somewhere that empty takes a 50 km drive plus about ninety minutes by camel.

How far is the camp, and how do I get there?

About 40 km from Jaisalmer, roughly a 45 minute drive. Pickup from the railway station, the bus stand or your hotel is free on every camp package. You can drive yourself and park at the camp instead.

Is it safe for children, elderly parents or solo women travellers?

Yes. The camp is enclosed, pathways are lit, and staff are on duty all night. We turn rowdy groups away and host families every week. Tell us who is travelling and we match the tent and the route to them.

What should I pack?

Loose cotton for the day, sunglasses, and something to keep sand out of your hair. Bring a jacket: nights drop fast, and in the coldest months it reaches about 5°C after dark. Quilts, woollen blankets and a fire that stays lit are on us.

What happens in the evening?

About three hours of Rajasthani folk music, Kalbeliya dance, a fire dance, and a group DJ set at the end. Want a quiet night instead? Take the Siala package. Out there it is just the fire.

What's the food, and is it vegetarian?

A Rajasthani buffet cooked fresh at camp over open flame, and yes, vegetarian. Our kitchen is FSSAI registered. Tell us about allergies and we cook around them.

What is your cancellation policy?

Full refund, no questions asked, up to 48 hours before your arrival date.

Still deciding?

Message us. We'll tell you honestly if it's the right night.

Send your dates, how many of you, and whether you want a tent or open sky. You get a price back, and a straight answer on whether that week suits you.
